Intelligent Design 101

I recently bought a book off titled Intelligent Design 101, edited by H. Wayne House, with Michael Behe, JP Moreland, Phillip Johnson and other IDer’s contributing.  There are a whole host of errors and falsehoods in the book but I would like to point out one that jumped right out at me immediately.  On page 35, Phillip Johnson writes,

Critics of our movement today often proclaim with glee that they have exposed our ‘wedge strategy.’  Creationism’s Trojan Horse is a book dedicated to explaining our evil strategy to take over the world.  I always find these conspiracy theories amusing because our strategy has been transparent from the beginning.  After all, I titled my fifth book The Wedge of Truth: Splitting the Foundations of Naturalism (Intervarsity Press, 2002) ….

But when these conspiracy theorists write their books and articles attacking the wedge strategy, they never refer to my books.  They refer to a fund-raising document that was stolen from the Discovery Institute.

I read Creationism’s Trojan Horse before reading Phillip Johnson’s claim in Intelligent Design 101 and guess what.  The authors extensively quote from Phillip Johnson’s other books.  Yes, the main focus of Creationism’s Trojan Horse is on the “Wedge Document” described by Johnson as the document stolen from the Discovery Institute, but it is far from the only source of information the authors draw upon.  In fact, the authors refer to Darwin on Trial, Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds, Objections Sustained: Subversive Essays on Evolution, Law and Culture, Reason in the Balance, and The Wedge of Truth.  In addition they refer to Johnson’s web writings, TV appearances and numerous articles he has published in a variety of different publications.

Oh, and by the way, Johnson seems to want to portray the Discovery Institute as an innocent victim of a theft of some innocuous internal document and they have been completely open about the Wedge Strategy.  What he doesn’t tell you is that the Discovery Institute initially denied ownership of the document and it wasn’t until a few years after its release that they fessed up to having written it when they could no longer deny the evidence that it was indeed their document (see Creationism’s Trojan Horse, Chapter 2).
